Sustainable Certification

Sustainability partners for 15 years.

On March 16, 2009, the Township of Bloomfield authorized Greener Bloomfield to serve the town's official green team and adopted the Resolution, "Supporting Participation in the Sustainable Jersey Municipal Certification Program" with the Mayor and Town Council affirming that they wished to pursue local initiatives and actions that, when implemented and documented to meet the program's set of rigorous standards, would lead to Sustainable Jersey Municipal Certification.

That same year, Greener Bloomfield was instrumental in the Township of Bloomfield becoming one of the first 28 municipalities in the State of New Jersey to be awarded Sustainable Jersey Bronze Level certification, bringing state-wide recognition to Bloomfield's commitment to creating green and sustainable processes in township operations.

Fostering a sustainable future.

The continuation of the Township and Greener Bloomfield's collaborative partnership has ensured that Bloomfield has maintained its municipal certification (which expires every three-years) and, along with it, public recognition for its sustainable efforts while maintaining eligibility for the program's resources and grants that support our community's future sustainability.

On October 18, 2021, it was announced that, of the 565 municipalities in the State of New Jersey, 160 were awarded Bronze Level certification and Bloomfield was among those distinguished, having documented 16 completed and approved actions in 9 categories for a total of 175 points.*

Greener Bloomfield and the Township of Bloomfield are currently working on town's application for the 2024 certification cycle.

Bringing sustainable actions to schools.

In 2021, the Sustainable Jersey for Schools Program was launched to certify individual schools and school districts. Greener Bloomfield volunteers were proud to be asked to work with the Bloomfield Puiblic School District on Actions that contributed to their applications for certification in both 2021 and 2024.

About the program.

The Sustainable Jersey Municipal Certification Program provides municipalities with a roadmap of sustainable "Actions" that, when followed, improve communities that want to go green, save money and take steps to sustain their quality of life over the long term.

Launched in 2009, Sustainable Jersey is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that offers tools, training and financial incentives to support and reward communities as they pursue sustainability programs. Municipalities that achieve Sustainable Jersey certification are considered by their peers, state government and experts and civic organizations in New Jersey, to be among the leaders in the state.
